Overview

Chivas' first ever 16-year-old is a sherry-heavy expression dominated by Longmorn single malt, and it's already picked up a Gold Medal at the 2026 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

It's another masterpiece from the now-retired Chivas Master Blender Sandy Hyslop, who put this together alongside novice blender – but notably quick racecar driver – Charles Leclerc.

"He was in the room, making decisions, pushing back. What we've created together is unmistakably his and unmistakably ours," said Hyslop.

Tasting his way through the Chivas Regal portfolio, Charles kept coming back to first-fill sherry cask Longmorn. That became the starting point for the 16-year-old result – Chivas' first ever release at this age, and, fittingly, Charles' Ferrari F1 number.

The blend:

  • Longmorn single malt at its heart
  • Finished in first-fill sherry casks
  • Shaped by Sandy Hyslop to ensure a rich, velvety, spiced character

Created hand-in-hand with Charles this is more than a Ferrari or F1 fan collectors piece, it’s also fantastic value at just $110.

Chivas Regal's History

The year is 1801. Two brothers, John and James Chivas, packing up from rural Scotland, arrive in Aberdeen with big ideas and bigger hearts. Their first stop: groceries, luxury goods, fine wines. They built a reputation not just on what they sold, but how they sold it. When people wanted something they couldn’t find, James Chivas tracked it down. When whisky drinkers asked for something smoother, gentler, he began blending whiskies in his cellar. That craft of blending became the backbone of Chivas. Then in 1843, those efforts caught royal attention, and Chivas Brothers earned their first Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria at Balmoral.

Fast‑forward to 1909, and the whisky world got its first taste of something new: a 25‑year‑old luxury blend, designed for discerning palates in New York and beyond. Chivas Regal was born. The roaring success of that first luxury blend was tempered by huge global events. Prohibition in the USA (the 1920s) very much threw a spanner into the works. Bars shut, imports dried up, and Chivas was forced to pause in many markets.

But whisky, like whisky drinkers, is resilient. In 1938 Chivas Regal re‑launched its 12‑year‑old expression: a blend designed to capture the richness of those older whiskies, in a more approachable package. From there, the brand continued to evolve over time, as all good whisky distilleries must.

At the centre of Chivas’ flavour lies Strathisla Distillery, in Keith, Speyside – the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Scottish Highlands. Its sweet, fruity, honeyed malts are the core of the house flavour, giving Chivas Regal its cream and fruit character. Longmorn is another malt that features heavily. Alongside grain whiskies, these help create the balance; smoothness, richness, no harsh edges. But exactly which whiskies go in, or how much of each? That’s the secret kept behind locked doors.

Over the 20th and 21st centuries, Chivas didn’t rest on its laurels and nailed a few releases that saw its fame continue:

  • 1997: Chivas Regal 18 Year Old joined the lineup. Richer, deeper, a step up for whisky lovers wanting more age.
  • 2007: The 25 Year Old returned in force. Heritage, luxury, prestige.
  • New expressions showed up: Mizunara‑cask finishes, limited editions, "Extra", "XV", special blends.

In 2001, the brand became part of Pernod Ricard, giving it resources and global reach to share that Speyside magic far and wide. Finally, new charcoal filtration technology turned the famous Speyside spirit into a crystal clear bottling. In 2025, Chivas Regal Crystalgold launched in Australia exclusively to Members of The Whisky Club.
