House of Hazelwood – Spirit of Scotland 46YO

Imagine getting your hands on 46-year-old Scotch, straight from the private collection of the owners of Balvenie and Glenfiddich. What do you reckon you’d be paying? $5,000? $10,000? $20,000?

Try $2384. For a whisky distilled in the late 1970s, blended in 1994, and then laid down for another 28 years before release. This is another level of whisky rarity, and it’s come from arguably the greatest inventory of aged Scotch whisky held anywhere in the world: the Gordon family’s House of Hazelwood (they own William Grant & Sons, so they’ve got unsurpassed access to whisky).

We tasted every whisky they had, and picked just one to bring to Australia, exclusively for Members of the Club. This was the clear winner: it stood out for still being beautifully balanced, even after all that time maturing (no hint of overoaking), and for being an incredible example of seventies-era Scotch. Bottled at a natural cask strength of 43.6% ABV, non-chill filtered, and all natural colour, this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime dram.
