The Glenlivet

The Glenlivet distillery sits in the Valley of the Livet in the heart of Speyside in north-east Scotland. Founded by George Smith, an illicit distiller, in 1824 it was Scotland's first legally licensed distillery. It has always been renowned for producing a smooth, complex and fruity single malt Scotch whisky. Many industry professionals regard it as the original home of the Speyside style of single malt Scotch whisky.

Did you know?

George Smith's decision to make The Glenlivet Scotland's first licensed distillery in 1824 was such an unpopular decision with other illicit distillers that he carried a pair of flintlock pistols just in case they followed through on their threat to watch him burn along with his distillery. You can see these pistols at the distillery today.

History

The Glenlivet was founded by George Smith in 1824, but he had been an illicit distiller for years before. In fact, King George proclaimed his fondness for The Glenlivet when he visited Scotland in August 1822. At this time, The Glenlivet was illicit whisky.

By the late 1830's The Glenlivet distillery was making 200 gallons per week and Andrew Ushers & Sons would become their sales agents. Andrew Usher would go on to become the first person to commercially blend Scotch whisky. This style of fruity, complex and smooth single malt whisky was very popular with blenders. So much so that other producers in Speyside decided to attach Glenlivet to their own distillery names as a signal to blenders of the style of whisky they were trying to make.

In 1884, The Glenlivet won the rights to be recognised as "The" Glenlivet.

Since then it has continued to grow in reputation and popularity as the original Speyside style single malt Scotch whisky.

George Smith develops The Glenlivet's signature style as an illicit distiller

In the Valley of the Livet, smugglers were commonplace. One such illicit distiller was George Smith who had a knack for producing light, fruity and complex single malt whisky.

King George IV orders The Glenlivet

On a visit to Scotland in August 2022, King George IV asks for a drop of the infamous Glenlivet. At this time it was an illicit whisky.

The Glenlivet gets a licence to distill

In 1824, George Smith made the decision to take The Glenlivet legal. He applied for a license to the disgust of the other illicit distillers and smugglers in the Speyside region. They told him he would burn alongside his distillery. So visceral were the threats that George would carry a pair of flintlock pistols at all times for security. You can still see these pistols at the distillery today.

The Glenlivet soars

The distillery is producing 200 gallons per week and appoints an Edinburgh sales agent to help spread the word.

More celebrity endorsement

Charles Dickens writes to urge his friend to try the 'rare old Glenlivet'.

The birth of the 'The'

Distilleries in the region had begun to tack the word "Glenlivet" on to the end of their own distilleries to try and steal some of the reputation and sales enjoyed by the original Speyside whisky. In response, the original Glenlivet fought for the right to refer to themselves as The Glenlivet. The only distillery in the region allowed to use this trademark.

The Glenlivet joins The Club

Our first ever Whisky of the Month by The Glenlivet is released. One of the few times this powerhouse has allowed another logo on their label.

In addition, The Glenlivet is signed up as a Whisky Club Clubhouse, our first in Speyside.

Did you know?

The Glenlivet's reputation for making a smooth, fruity and complex style of whisky was so famous that other distilleries tried to steal some of the reputation by adding the term Glenlivet after their own distillery name. If you were to find a cask of The Macallan from 1893, you would see The Macallan-Glenlivet stencilled on the end.

Whisky Style

The Glenlivet is famed for its complex, fruity and smooth style of new make spirit. It works extremely well in first fill American oak ex-Bourbon barrels. Imagine a tropicla fruit salad covered in vanilla custard.

During fermentation, some of the spent grains from previous batches is introduced to kickstart the process. This "sour mash" process introduces complexity and also helps to achieve consistency.

Fermentation takes place in both wooden and stainless steel washbacks, but fermentation is relatively short to minimise the difference between each. This preserves the orchard fruitiness in the spirit style.

Distillation of The Glenlivet takes place in tall, lantern shaped copper pot stills. The height of the stills encourage only the lightest and fruitiest flavours over their neck. The spirit stills have near horizontal lyne arms. This means much more copper contact than you might expect. The entire stillhouse setup encourages complexity in fruitiness. This translates to a spirit and whisky that plays at the front and mid palate.

The majority of The Glenlivet is filled into ex-American oak Bourbon barrels. These bring notes of coconut, brown sugar and vanilla to the palate.

Distillery Process

The Glenlivet is a powerhouse of a distillery, capable of producing over 20,000,000 litres of alcohol each year. Three separate stillhouses are used these days, each setup to produce the same style of fruity and complex new make spirit. The tall lantern-style stills have been emulated throughout Speyside due to their ability to produce a whisky of fruity complexity sought after by blenders and single malt drinkers alike.

The Glenlivet FAQ

What is The Genlivet?

The Glenlivet is one of the most famous single malt Scotch whisky distilleries, located in Scotland’s Speyside region. It is widely regarded as a benchmark for the Speyside style, known for its smooth, fruity, and approachable character.

When was The Glenlivet founded?

The Glenlivet was officially founded in 1824 by George Smith, following the passing of the Excise Act which legalised distilling in Scotland. It was one of the first distilleries to obtain a legal licence, helping set the standard for Scotch whisky production.

Where is The Glenlivet made?

The Glenlivet is produced in Speyside, in the remote Livet Valley of Scotland. The area’s natural springs and cool climate provide ideal conditions for whisky production and maturation.

What style of whisky does The Glenlivet produce?

The Glenlivet is known for a light, fruity, and floral Speyside style, often featuring notes of orchard fruits (apple, pear), citrus, vanilla, and soft oak. Its balanced profile has made it one of the most recognised single malts in the world.

What water source does The Glenlivet use?

The distillery draws its water from Josie’s Well, a nearby spring that provides the pure, mineral-balanced water essential for mashing and fermentation.

How is The Glenlivet whisky unique?

The Glenlivet's tall, lantern shaped stills give it a light, fruity style of spirit as only the lightest aromatic compounds make it into the spirit.

What casks are used to mature The Glenlivet?

The Glenlivet primarily uses:

  • American oak casks, often ex-bourbon, contributing vanilla and sweetness
  • European oak casks, sometimes seasoned with sherry, adding richness and spice

Many expressions are matured or finished in a combination of cask types to build complexity.

Does The Glenlivet produce limited editions?

Yes. Alongside its core range, The Glenlivet releases limited editions, cask finishes, and single cask expressions that explore different maturation styles, flavour profiles, and sometimes higher strengths. The Whisky Club has featured many over the last 10 years.

Has The Whisky Club released The Glenlivet before?

Yes. The Whisky Club has featured 7 single casks from The Glenlivet, and in 2026 was the first Whisky Club to get our logo on a special batch of The Glenlivet with a 14 year old cask strength edition.

Is The Glenlivet suitable for beginners?

Yes. The Glenlivet is often recommended for those new to single malt Scotch due to its approachable, smooth character, while still offering enough depth to appeal to experienced whisky drinkers.
