 / 8 mins

We've all got that friend who loves whisky and dread watching their face when they unwrap the bottle we gifted them for a special occasion. Did we get them something they don't like? Have they already got this bottle? Or did the bottle shop sell me a dud? All valid feelings and questions to ask. But what if you could guarantee quality and exclusivity through free Membership to the world's biggest subscription Whisky Club?

Here at The Whisky Club we've all been there, which is why we make it our mission to source rare and exclusive whiskies for every budget and palate from the biggest names in global whisky. Glenfiddich, Jack Daniel's, Glenmorangie, Laphroaig, Ardbeg and The Glenlivet are just a handful of names that have made special whiskies just for our Members.

Why the best whisky gift is one they cannot find in a shop

Buying a bottle of Glenlivet 12 years old will raise a smile in a whisky drinker. You've remembered they like whisky, you've avoided the polarisation of peated whisky and you've made an effort to choose a decent single malt. They might have a bottle of this already, but there is always room for another. They'll likely pour you a dram there and then, but from the already opened bottle.

Glenlivet 15 year old might get you a high-five. You've remembered they like a Speyside, likely gone to an independent bottle shop for advice, and then chosen to go for the next bottle up. A special occasion whisky that they can share with their whisky drinking friends. That bottle is getting opened and they are pouring one for you both right now while they explain the differences between the 15 and the 12.

But what if Membership of The Whisky Club allowed you to source a Glenlivet 14 year old that they've never seen before? It's a 14 year old Speyside single malt matured in 100% first fill American Oak casks. It has all the hallmarks of a great single malt: it's from a famous brand, it's natural colour, non-chill filtered and the best bit? It has been made by The Glenlivet's Master Whiskymaker exclusively for Members of The Whisky Club. This one's getting you a hug, a raft of questions about where you got it, and the opportunity to explain that this one no longer exists anywhere except on the auction market, where previous Whisky Club releases have realised up to 16x their retail value.

If you want to go over and above for the whisky lover in your life, there's no better place to find Limited Edition, rare or award-winning whiskies than with The Whisky Club.

Check out The Whisky Club's Guide to limited edition whiskies for some of the rarer drams we have featured.

A bottle of Girvan 40 Year Old 1985 single grain Scotch whiskyA bottle of Girvan 40 Year Old 1985 single grain Scotch whisky

A gift for the landmark birthday

Four Girvan 1985 single casks were bottled exclusively by The Whisky Club in their 40th year. These were very popular with people born in 1985 to celebrate their own fortieth birthday.

Girvan is a single grain Scotch whisky distillery and these casks showcased the complexity and delicacy a whisky can develop over four decades in oak. They also highlighted how each cask of whisky is unique.

We found notes of citrus, chocolate, apples and oak.

For people who have a landmark birthday on the horizon.

We've also featured 18, 21, 25, 30 and 50 year old whisky in the past for those milestone birthdays.

A gift for the Jack Daniel's drinker

There is one thing Jack Daniel's drinkers like, and that is more Jack Daniel's. But what if you could enhance their collection with a Limited Release. Here at The Whisky Club we've bottled a few Jack Daniel's Single Barrels.

Each of these legendary releases are taken from a single barrel at The Jack Daniel's distillery. This means they are limited in number with around 200 bottles of each in existence. It also means each one of them is slightly different to the next in flavour making them real collectors pieces.

This single barrel was selected exclusively for The Whisky Club Members from the top of their rickhouses and released at cask strength. Only 1 in 5,000 casks are good enough to be released like this.

We found orange zest, pineapple and a wonderful oak spice in here.

For people who like Jack, Jim or Bourbon in general.

A bottle of Glen Scotia 12 year old Campbeltown single malt Scotch whiskyA bottle of Glen Scotia 12 year old Campbeltown single malt Scotch whisky

A gift for the whisky geek

If buying for someone who loves whisky, we recommend thinking about the more obscure distilleries and regions. This Glen Scotia fits that mould perfectly.

Campbeltown is Scotland's smallest and often forgotten whisky-making region. A town with three distilleries, they are known for their unique flavour profile mixing fruitiness and coastal influences.

The 12 years old is the latest addition to their core range and it carries everything a whisky drinker wants from a Campbeltown malt. Tropical fruit, vanilla sweetness and a hint of sea breeze.

Notes of vanilla, orange and pineapple were present.

Other distilleries to consider include Bruichladdich, Waub's Harbour and Glenglassaugh.

A bottle of Ardmore 2008 Berry Bros and Rudd Highland single malt Scotch whiskyA bottle of Ardmore 2008 Berry Bros and Rudd Highland single malt Scotch whisky

A gift for the Jameson drinker

This one's for the friend who loves Jameson. Scotch isn't for them, picklebacks are their cocktail of choice, and they love a triple distilled Irish whiskey. How do we expand their horizons?

Our advice is to look further into the world of Irish whiskey. These days Jameson is made at Midleton distillery in Ireland. It's distilled at the same place as the big names in single pot still Irish whiskey, so why not grab them an out of the ordinary bottle from their favourite brand.

Jameson Single Pot Still - 5 Oak Cask Release is like no other Jameson out there. It is all triple distilled and made from a mix of malted and unmalted barley. 5 cask types are used, but it still retains the light, fruity and smooth style Jameson is known for.

Tasting notes included sweet honeycomb, dark chocolate and salted caramel.

Other Irish brands to look for include Bushmills, Dunville's and Redbreast.

How to choose the right bottle for the whisky lover in your life

The best thing about single malt whiskies, is there is at least one for everyone. But how do you select the one for an upcoming gifting opportunity? Let's have a look t a few scenarios:

I don't know what they drink, just that they like whisky...

Our advice here is simple: avoid smoke. People who like peated whisky love it, but also appreciate something without smoke. The opposite is not true. So avoid whisky from Islay. We'd suggest a Speyside or a Highland whisky if you're looking for Scotch.

They love peated whisky...

One of our favourite things about peated whisky lovers, is they love telling people how much they love peated whisky. This one's easy. Look for terms like smoke, peat and Islay on the label. Brands like Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Port Charlotte and Highland Park will all scratch their itch.

They drink Jack and coke...

Excellent, they have a sweet tooth and will appreciate American whiskies. We'd suggest upgrading their Jack Daniel's to a single barrel or checking out the wider Bourbon category. Brands like Maker's Mark and Bardstown are great places to start.

They are just starting out so don't know what they like yet...

This is almost a blank canvas. We'd again avoid peat, until you know if they like it or not. For a beginner, there's a good chance they have the main Scotch whisky regions and styles covered, so we'd suggest Japanese, Australian or New Zealand single malts. Similarly, this might be a good opportunity to look at whisky from Campbeltown or an interesting cask finish.

Gift a Whisky Club Membership

When a bottle of whisky is the right gift

Here at The Whisky Club, we think that there's always an excuse for giving someone a whisky, but some occasions lend themselves to a gift bottle more than others. Here are our top occasions and advice for picking a whisky:

Christmas - the ultimate time to share a dram with family. Given the traditions of Christmas cakes, puddings and general rich, decadent desserts after Christmas dinner, we tend to look for something from a Sherry cask. Brands to seek out include The Macallan, Tamdhu and The Glendronach.

Birthdays - there's nothing better for a whisky drinker than trying something the same age as them, but we do recognise that this gets more expensive as people get older. Seek out specific age statements (18, 21, 25 etc) or look for specific vintages to wow the recipient.

Mother's Day and Father's Day - show the people who raised you in the world some love with a dram of something special. Loch Lomond is always a Father's Day winner, especially if your Dad likes golf and for Mother's Day this year, The Lakes Chocolatier has been a huge hit. It's also a great time to top up their Club balance with a gift card.

Corporate Gifts - the exclusivity of The Whisky Club's selection make our bottles extra special for corporate gifting. Single malt whisky is respected the world over, and if your colleague is from overseas, they won't be able to get a Whisky Club exclusive back home.

Whisky gifting FAQs

What is the best Scotch whisky to give as a gift?

For the whisky lover, anything delicious and slightly out of the ordinary will take pride of place on their shelf. Avoid entry level products if your budget allows. If they love a 12 year old from one distillery, the next age statement up or a different cask finish is a great shout. We have curated a selection of Whisky Club exclusive bottles to help you choose.

How much should I spend on a whisky gift?

You can get a limited release bottle from The Whisky Club for as little as $120 plus postage. These are often one-off batches that will never be repeated. If $120 is on the high side, you can also add credit to a Club Membership account with a gift card or grab a unique crystal cut Glencairn whisky glass created exclusively for Club Members.

Can I gift a Whisky Club membership to someone?

Absolutely. While Membership is free, you can send the whisky lover in your life credit for their account. $165 will cover their next whisky of the month and delivery to their door.

What if I do not know what whisky they like?

If you are flying blind, we suggest avoiding peaty or smoky whisky as these can be a bit like vegemite. People who like them absolutely love them. People who don’t will absolutely hate the flavour profile. Luckily, most people who like smoky whisky, often like non-smoky drams too. So avoiding peat will bring a smile to both sides of the divide.

Are limited-edition whiskies worth more over time?

While we cannot give advice on the future value of whiskies we feature, we can say that many limited edition whiskies do gain in value, but they are at their most valuable when opened and shared with friends. Have a look at The Whisky Club’s guide to limited edition whiskies for more insights.
