Living Souls Ninety Nine & One

Looks like meat’s back on the menu.

The clue to the story behind this dram’s in the name: 99% is a single malt from “a famous heavily-peated Islands distillery” (it’s Ledaig), matured for 18 years in Sherry and American oak casks. That other 1%? A tiny sliver of 3-year-old grain whisky, added by accident, and virtually undetectable.

With the tell-tale oiliness of non-chill filtration and bottled at the distillery’s standard 46.3% ABV, there’s a wallop of dried orange, white pepper and juicy grapefruit amongst all the campfire bacon, smoke and sherried fruitiness. It drinks like a pristine single malt – just one with a great story attached to it. It’s all natural colour, as well.

An official Ledaig bottling of the same age would usually cost between $200–255; but as this is a '99-1' blend, Club Members will pay just $135 for this delight.

Smoke lovers, beware. Falling in love with this dram is very easy, but as a true one-off release, nobody will be able to buy it ever again – unless another happy accident befalls a vat of Ledaig, that is...
