There are luxury brands, and then there are brands trusted to supply the British Royal Family. Think Aston Martin, Burberry and Cartier. Then there’s Berry Bros. & Rudd, the world’s oldest wine and spirits merchant and a name that's spent centuries supplying kings, queens, aristocrats, adventurers and whisky lovers alike.

In Britain, a Royal Warrant is about as prestigious as it gets. Dating back to the 12th century, it’s the official seal of approval granted to companies supplying goods to the royal household. In other words, when you see those royal crests on a bottle or storefront, you can be fairly certain you’re dealing with something exceptional.

Berry Bros. & Rudd’s relationship with the Crown stretches back to the reign of King George III, with the company receiving its first Royal Warrant in 1903 from King Edward VII. Queen Elizabeth II granted another in 1952, while King Charles III, then known as The Prince of Wales, followed suit in 1998. More than three centuries after opening its doors, the company remains one of the most respected names in the drinks world.

The story began in 1698, when the Widow Bourne established a grocer’s shop at No. 3 St James’s Street in London. Remarkably, that same building remains the company’s spiritual home today. Set in London’s fashionable West End and only a short stroll from St James’s Palace, the shop quickly became a favourite among the city’s wealthy elite.

Back then, whisky wasn’t the focus. Berry Bros. traded in coffee, tea, cocoa, spices and snuff; exotic luxuries in Georgian England. Spirits and wine gradually took centre stage during the early 1800s, and in 1920 the company formally became Berry Bros. & Rudd after joining forces with fellow wine merchant Hugh Rudd.

By then, the company’s reputation was already legendary. Their cellars famously sheltered the exiled Napoleon III, they supplied wines aboard the ill-fated RMS Titanic, and during American Prohibition their products somehow continued finding their way across the Atlantic into thirsty hands.

One of their most enduring creations arrived in 1903, when Berry Bros. developed a warming ginger liqueur for King Edward VII after his cold open-carriage journeys. More than a century later, “The King’s Ginger” is still produced today.

Whisky history followed in 1923 with the launch of Cutty Sark, a blend that would become one of the world’s most recognisable Scotch whiskies. Ownership eventually passed to The Edrington Group in 2010, with Berry Bros. acquiring The Glenrothes as part of the deal. Drawing on their wine background, they helped pioneer the idea of vintage-dated single malt releases before Glenrothes returned to Edrington ownership in 2017.

Today, Berry Bros. & Rudd’s operation stretches far beyond the historic London storefront. While No. 3 St James’s Street remains the beating heart of the company, their modern retail home now sits around the corner at Pall Mall, linked to the original premises through historic underground cellars and passageways. Beyond London, the company operates major facilities in Basingstoke, Hampshire, along with offices and representation in Battersea, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan. 

The Basingstoke site in particular has become central to the company’s global operation. Opened in 1967 to modernise storage and bottling operations, it has evolved into an enormous bonded warehouse complex housing millions of bottles, tasting rooms, private reserves and specialist storage facilities. Today the site contains multiple warehouses, extensive fine wine reserves and highly controlled maturation and storage environments designed to protect some of the world’s rarest wines and spirits.

And those reserves are staggering. Berry Bros. & Rudd has spent centuries building relationships with wineries, distilleries, brokers and private collectors across the globe, giving them access to vast inventories of maturing wine and whisky casks few companies could rival. Bordeaux first-growths, ancient Madeira, rare Burgundy, old Sherry butts and exceptional Scotch whisky casks all pass through their warehouses and ledgers. Their independent bottlings regularly draw from parcels of mature stock sourced from some of Scotland’s most revered distilleries, often selected from individual casks after decades of ageing.

That extraordinary access is ultimately what separates Berry Bros. & Rudd from ordinary merchants. They are not simply retailers; they are custodians of one of the drinks world’s deepest reserves of stock and expertise. Whether selecting a single sherry butt of old Speyside whisky, releasing a rare cask-strength Islay malt, or sourcing centuries-old wines for collectors and royalty alike, the company operates with the kind of reach and authority only three hundred years in the trade can deliver.

History and royal connections may open the door, but it’s quality that has kept Berry Bros. & Rudd at the pinnacle for more than three centuries. Their “Own Selection” bottlings in particular have become highly sought after among whisky drinkers, wine collectors and spirits enthusiasts alike. Thanks to generations of relationships and access to some of the world’s greatest reserves of maturing stock, Berry Bros. & Rudd continues to do what it has always done best: select only the finest casks worthy of bearing its famous name.
