Tamnavulin 25 Year Old Diamond Anniversary

Tucked away in Speyside, that famously whisky-dense corner of Scotland, Tamnavulin is right at home among some of the country’s most prolific distilleries. The setting does a lot of the heavy lifting, with its mild, steady climate creating ideal conditions for maturation, shaping a spirit that's typically smooth, sweet, and approachable.

Tamnavulin makes the most of this with a clear focus on double cask maturation. The whisky spends time in one cask to build its foundation, then moves to a second cask to develop added flavour and character. The result is a Speyside malt that balances easy drinking with a bit more depth than you might expect.

The name Tamnavulin comes from Gaelic, meaning “mill on the hill,” a reference to the 16th-century woollen mill that once stood on the site in the village of Tomnavulin. Founded in 1966, it was built during a period when demand for Scotch was booming and blending houses such as Whyte & Mackay, Crawfords, and Mackinlay's needed reliable supplies of malt whisky.

Constructed by Invergordon Distillers, Tamnavulin was designed for output. Six stills, efficient production, and even Saladin maltings for a time. It did its job well, quietly supporting blends rather than chasing attention as a single malt.

Like much of the industry, Tamnavulin did not escape the downturn of the 1990s. The distillery was mothballed in 1995, restarted very briefly in 2000, then fell silent again until 2007. Its revival came after a change in ownership, when United Spirits brought it back online with a careful restoration. The approach was not to reinvent Tamnavulin, but to refine what it already did best.

That core style remains. The distillery produces a light, cereal-forward spirit, shaped by relatively short fermentation and large stills. It's a versatile base, well suited to cask influence, which explains the direction Tamnavulin has taken in recent years.

In 2010, the stills were adjusted to create a slightly richer new make, better aligned with wine cask maturation. When the distillery was relaunched as a single malt in 2016 for its 50th anniversary, it had a clearer identity. Accessible Speyside whisky with a focus on layered cask finishes.

Since then, the range has expanded through a series of wine cask expressions, including Sherry, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, and Sauvignon Blanc. It's a broad and slightly unconventional lineup, but it works because the spirit itself is adaptable and does not overpower the influence of the cask.

Today, Tamnavulin produces around 4.3 million litres of spirit each year. It draws its water from underground springs and continues to operate with the same quiet efficiency it was built for.
