Very Old Scotch 20 Year Old Blend, Created Exclusively for The Whisky Club

We’ve got to be very cagey about where the exquisite liquid in this bottle came from, because part of securing this incredibly aged parcel at such a ridiculous price is that we can’t tell you exactly which storied whiskymaking houses contributed.

But we can tell you how Craig – our Head of Whisky Creation – uncovered this treasure-trove Scotch for Club Members. 

During his time as a Master Blender in Scotland, he heard about this rare parcel after talking to an industry colleague, who mentioned a particularly special dormant small batch of casks that had been patiently maturing for close to 20 years.

The high-malt marriage was put together in 2017, combining parcels of 100% Sherry-matured single malt from a legendary unpeated Islay distillery; three Sherry bomb masters in Speyside; an unnamed Islands distillery; and a dab of fruity, waxy Highland malt. Once blended, it was filled back into Sherry butts and hogsheads to continue maturing, with no set date for bottling.

Eight years later, Craig hunted it down, and once he got his hands on cask samples, he knew we had to have it for the Club: “On paper, this whisky seemed too good to be true. 20 years old, all Sherry matured and with a cracking array of distilleries in the blend. What’s more, it had been marrying in cask for 8 years. The aroma carries notes of toffee, dried fruit, citrus and Sherry. The palate is rich and complex with more citrus, more Sherry and a floral note that only develops with age. It’s no wonder this won a gold medal in San Francisco.”

This one-off batch – featuring stocks plundered from some of our favourite single malt distilleries – is landing exclusively for Members of The Whisky Club as August’s Whisky of the Month, from Friday 7 August.
