{"product_id":"benromach-12-year-old-unpeated-first-fill-sherry","title":"Benromach Limited: Unpeated First-Fill Sherry Cask","description":"\u003cp\u003eIf we asked Club Members to build their ideal distillery, it’d probably end up looking a lot like Benromach.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTucked away at the very edge of Speyside (and straddling the line between Highland and Speyside stylistically), it’s a tiny distillery that’s not really changed how it makes whisky since the fifties (or before).\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWe’re talking chalk on blackboards for registering cask fills, hand-measuring yeast, manual cuts on the stills and an original Boby grist-mill grumbling away, grinding very lightly peated (often organic) barley. And while it’s easy for all this to sound like romantic nostalgic nonsense, it means nothing if the whiskies aren’t great, and good grief, are they great.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere’s a strong case to be made that the lineup of Benromach 10, 15 and 21 is the best core trio of age statement whiskies of any distillery in Scotland (a thing we argue about often at Club HQ), with each having won so many consecutive Double Golds at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition that they’ve received Platinum designation. Their 40 Year Old was also named Best in Show at the same, and the 15 took out The Whisky Exchange’s blind-tested Whisky of the Year in 2024, beating out bangers from Balvenie, Lagavulin, Glenallachie and Kavalan.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAll of which is a long preamble to talk about this whisky, but the context is important: to get your hands on the first 12-year-old age statement, unpeated, 100% first-fill Sherry-matured from such a ridiculously underrated distillery is a rare chance indeed.
