Overview
Whisky lovers familiar with Tasmania’s distillery scene will recognise the name at once. McHenry have been making whisky since 2011 on the Tasman Peninsular where the terroir is akin to the Scottish coast. Due to this moist southern climate, the whisky loses a little more alcohol than other Tassie whiskies during maturation, leading to delicate whiskies with great complexity.
Imagine our delight then, when we tasted this delicious 10-year-old with its cask strength of 55.0% ABV, swirling with gooey spiced nougat, pistachio, and Swiss milk chocolate, with a finish of rich oak and blueberry pie. McHenry cask strength releases are rare, and we knew we had to bring this to Club Members.
How did the magic happen? Taking a rare 1988 French Oak 230L barrel containing Port since 1988, McHenry filled this barrel in 2014 with their single malt and waited ten long years before bottling at cask strength — perfectly in time for us to share this with you and your fellow Club Members as #4 in our landmark Australian Decade Series.

McHenry Distillery's History
"With a name like William Fraser McHenry you should learn the bagpipes and make whisky.”
This casual comment from a Sydney neighbour led Bill McHenry to Port Arthur, Tasmania, where he now owns and runs Australia’s southernmost whisky distillery.
Founded in 2011, the tiny William McHenry & Sons Distillery was established on a 100-acre farm, which provides a tranquil setting and access to pure springwater and cool, moist air perfect for whiskymaking. In fact, the climate in this southern part of Tasmania is extremely close to Scottish conditions.
Every base ingredient for their spirits are locally sourced, as the family look to express their unique terroir in their spirits. The distillery uses a custom, Tasmanian-made water-jacketed electrically heated 500L pot still, which allows for precise quality control and consistency.
McHenry Distillery’s first single malt whisky was released in 2016, and they’ve since received international acclaim.
The Whisky Club released the distillery’s first ever 10-year-old whisky in 2024.
