What makes this whisky so special

Stranahan’s. Founded on the younger side of this century, this whiskey distillery’s gone from unknown to regularly sold-out editions in the space of 20 years.

Made up of the distillery’s best finish for the year, each annual limited edition in the Snowflake series is debuted at its own Snowflake festival where “Strana-fans” gather to celebrate this American whiskey pilgrimage. And celebrate they do – Snowflake releases sell out so fast they don’t see the end of the festival, much less make it to Australia.

Then the impossible happened. We were offered the chance to snap up a portion of Stranahan’s Snowflake 2022 – and we’ve probably never moved so quickly.

Edition #25 “Humboldt Peak” has humble beginnings, made from 100% Rocky Mountain barley and spring water and matured in No. 3 char American white oak. But like Stranahan’s sister distillery – Old Bushmills in Northern Ireland – it's the finishing casks that really ramp up this single malt: Cabernet Sauvignon, Oloroso Sherry and Barbados rum casks crank the red fruit and nutty notes through the roof. Aged between 5–10 years, it’s then been bottled non-chill filtered at 94 Proof (47% ABV) with no added colour.

To give you an idea of how outrageous this is, Stranahan’s Snowflake bottles go for silly money when they end up on auction sites, and we’ve seen this very same edition has sold online for more than $2,300.

This is American’s most sought-after single malt, and Members, was yours for $225. Americans would be losing their minds if they knew we had 300 bottles in our warehouse, only for Club Members.

Stranahan's History

Beginning with what's surely the most unusual meet-cute in whisky history, founders Jess Graber and George Stranahan met when Graber – then a volunteer firefighter – was called out put out a barn fire near Aspen, Colorado. The barn belonged to Stranahan who owned a local brewery, and the two hit it off. This was back in 1998.

Soon Graber and Stranahan began experimenting with the idea of making a distinctly Colorado whiskey. Drawing on Stranahan’s brewing experience and the region’s high-quality barley and Rocky Mountain water, the pair developed a recipe based on 100% malted barley. In 2004, they officially founded Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, opening what was Colorado’s first legal distillery since Prohibition.

The first Stranahan’s Original was released in 2006. The early batches even used beer mash from Stranahan’s Flying Dog Brewery connection, tying the whiskey directly back to George’s brewing roots.

Since then, Stranahan’s has continued to experiment with cask finishes and longer-aged releases, developing a cult following in the US, especially with their Snowflake series. Each annual limited edition gets debuted at its own Snowflake festival where “Strana-fans” gather to celebrate this American whiskey pilgrimage. These editions often don't see the end of the festival, and if they do, they'll likely end up on auction sites where keen punters will bid in the thousands for the pleasure of adding one to their collection. Not bad for a distillery founded on the younger side of this century!
