While it was independently established in 1896, the vast majority of Tamdhu’s existence was spent in the same stable as Macallan, Highland Park, and Glenrothes – all deservedly known as the best in the business when it comes to Sherry maturation.

This means Tamdhu perfected their Sherry cask maturation under the watchful eye of their former owners (and close neighbors) Macallan… So they’ve got access to the exact same incredible Sherry cask sourcing that made Macallan the legend it is today.

That’s right. Every single drop of Tamdhu’s delicious, fruity spirit has gone into a Sherry cask. And when it comes to actually putting their whiskies together, the team rely on their exceptional understanding of the nuances and subtle differences between first-fill European and American oak Sherry casks from the different bodegas – as well as the need for the more delicate influence of refill casks – to build a complex, balanced dram.

And that’s exactly what they’ve done in putting together Tamdhu 2014 Vintage Sherry Matured Batch Strength, Created Exclusively for The Whisky Club. Drawn from 100% Oloroso Sherry casks, this is sherried whiskymaking at its finest. First-fill European oak leads the charge with rich spiced fruitcake, toffee and milk chocolate, balanced sublimely against caramelised vanilla, raspberry jubes and a buttery nuttiness from the American oak Oloroso, with a small parcel of refill casks providing backbone and depth.

After tasting the batch at a range of strengths, we landed on 50.7% ABV as the perfect ABV to express this single-vintage dram’s full fruity complexity, before bottling it with all natural colour and non-chill filtration.
