Clubhouse focus: Benromach distillery

Benromach is a traditional Speyside distillery based in Forres. Nestled between Nairn and Elgin, it is committed to making Speyside whisky the old fashioned way. Reopened by Gordon and MacPhail in 1998, they have kept much of the traditional methods in place. Whether using a hint of peat smoke in the barley to deliver body in the spirit, running their small stills very slowly to promote fruitiness or filling into first fill American and European oak casks to deliver rich natural colour in their malts, there is no doubt they are embracing whiskymaking from the early 20th century.

What can Members expect?

The distillery is recognisable on approach by its traditional red brick chimney stack. A hop over to the other side of the railway tracks and you arrive at a small operation with a big warm welcome.

The distillery is tiny by Speyside standards with mashing, fermenting and distillation all taking place in the one room. The distillers here can see and smell every part of production from one spot allowing them to quickly move from one job to the next. They pay attention to the old ways of doing things ensuring Benromach is as rich, fruity and malty as it has always been. That's not to say they are not looking for continuous improvement with yeast trials, barley trials and cask trials constantly ensuring that they are not missing a trick that would make this award winning spirit even better.

As Members of The Whisky Club you will receive 20% off disitllery tour tickets. Booking in advance is essential. Just use the code BENROMACHTWC at checkout online. In addition, you can show your Membership card at the distillery for 10% off in the cellar door.
