Overview

Hellyers Road has come of age.

Thanks to the pure and consistent quality of the whisky across their range, they dominated at the 2024 World Whisky Awards, taking home a slew of golds and Most Awarded Distillery.

It took fellow Tasmanians, Sullivans Cove, nearly 20 years from inception to winning World's Best Whisky in 2014. Hellyers Road's performance this year at the same competition is a turning point; it draws a new line in the sand for the distillery, and clearly signals to the world that Australian whisky is no one-trick pony.

In April 2024 we all celebrated the success of the original Tasmanian whisky pioneers: Lark (1992), Sullivans Cove (1994), and Hellyers Road (1997), who set out against the odds to create the modern Australian whisky industry, now with over 100 distilleries.

And how many Aussie distilleries can create a bespoke vintage release? The handful of comparable vintage Australian whiskies start at prices upwards of $250 for a far smaller 500ml bottle. That’s before even mentioning its specs and heritage.

Hellyers Road Vintage Triple Cask Created Exclusively for the Whisky Club is a vatting of two parcels of casks laid down in 2014 (Sherry and Port) and 2016 (American oak and Port), bottled in 2024 at 48.2% ABV, non-chill filtered and natural colour.

The 2014 portion carries the Hellyers Road orange blossom true-line, while 2016 adds Port-rich nuttiness and cigar box. The nose opens into marmalade, beeswax, plump sultana and nutty nougat. A beautifully balanced palate follows, with seamless flavours of toffee, gingerbread, cinnamon-stewed apricot and a little toasty oak. A waxy drive brings all those rich fruits, spicy oak and savoury sweetness tumbling along wonderfully into a building, white fudge finish.

It's the result of a quarter of a century spent perfecting their distillation process through continuous development and improvement, and an enormous breadth of old casks to cherry-pick from to create the best showcase whisky for the Club - plus a wonderful benchmark for the new generation of Aussie distillery legends.

Bottled a step up from their core releases, at 48.2% ABV, there’s complexity to this whisky that belies age statements and transcends whisky specs. What’s on paper is merely a result of the best possible whisky that Hellyers Road could put in your glass, as a Member of The Whisky Club.

Hellyers Road's History

As far as distillery histories go, Hellyers Road’s is one of the most charming. The distillery was established in 1999 by a group of whisky-mad dairy farming families from the wild and windswept northwest of Tasmania, and today remains firmly and very proudly in the hands of these same families.
