Whisky flipping under the spotlight in Ohio, US

An Ohio senator has proposed that certain bottles be opened and resealed at the point of purchase to combat ‘flipping’, or illegal reselling.

Some US states control the distribution of alcohol, and rare and sought-after bottles are released through a lottery or on a first-come first-served basis with a suggested retail price.

Ohio Democrat state senator Bill DeMora is concerned this system fosters illicit activities — customers are illegally reselling bottles and some stores are claimed to tip off customers to allocated drops.

“I’m just trying to look out for all the regular bourbon-lovers like myself,” DeMora told Fox 4 news.

In October last year, DeMora introduced Senate Bill 320. This would require Ohio retailers to open and reseal allocated bottles at the point of purchase to prevent them from entering the secondary market.

DeMora is also calling for large fines for those who resell bottles.
