Why The Australian Decade Series is so special
Australian whisky lovers, you haven’t seen anything like this before. For the first time, Australian 10-year-old whiskies have ever stood side-by-side as a part of a series. But why is The Australian Decade Series so significant?
The Australian Decade Series is the oldest ever multi-distillery collection of Australian whiskies from some of the country’s founding whiskymakers. This unrepeatable collection of 10-year-old single casks stand together to celebrate the modern Aussie whisky industry's coming of age.
“This series marks an important milestone for Australian whisky, which has grown from 28 whisky distilleries in 2014 to over 150 distilleries in 2024,” says The Whisky Club’s Co-Founder, Emily Ashbolt Cason.
The cogs of the Australian whisky industry as we know it started in the 90s. But it started with a simple question in the late 80s when Bill Lark famously asked the question that spawned Australia’s craft distilling movement: why wasn’t anybody making whisky in Tasmania?
This simple question sparked an idea, which led to reform. Flash forward, and Lark Distillery was founded in 1992 which created a movement, and the rest is whisky history.
But, it was a slow burn. And only a few distilleries were operating by the year 2000. Come 2014, and fellow Tassie distillery Sullivans Cove French Oak was named 'World's Best Single Malt' at the World Whiskies Awards.
The win cemented Australia into the whisky-verse, carving the way for every craft distillery in the country. People across the globe started seeking out Aussie whisky. In turn, this has seen a huge proliferation of new distilleries popping up across the country.
”For some of the founding distilleries we’ve worked with on The Decade Series, this is the first time they’ve released 10-year-old whisky, and we’re humbled to now be bringing it to Australian whisky drinkers around the country,” Ashbolt Cason says.
